Check conflicts without closing everything

Save unsaved work. Close or pause only an app known to be using the camera, then observe. If you close many programs at once, you lose the evidence that identifies the conflict. Do not assume the remote person's missing picture proves your own camera has failed.

Check device choice and privacy

A computer may expose several cameras; a phone may have multiple lenses but limited browser controls. Site permission, operating-system privacy, and hardware availability are separate. Use only instructions verified for the actual platform. If the picture exists but looks poor, route to Improve Video Quality rather than changing permission.

Make a controlled retry

Leave the current product state safely, make one change, return, and observe the result. Repeated rapid starts can create more uncertainty. If the whole experience fails to initialize, use Video Chat Not Loading.

Escalate with useful, redacted context

Record device class, operating system/version, browser/version, exact symptom, time, and whether another app used the camera. Remove faces, names, tabs, account details, and location clues from a screenshot before sharing it. Use Contact once the verified support route is active.

Separate wrong camera from failed camera

If a different view appears, the camera may be working while the selected input is not the one expected. Note the device name and available selection controls. If the intended camera is absent, reconnect it only after saving work and following hardware guidance. If every camera produces a black view, inspect covers, physical privacy switches, system permission, and other-app use before concluding that the hardware failed.

Do not test with someone else's session

Use the local state available in the product or a trusted device setting. Do not repeatedly connect to strangers merely to ask whether the image works. A controlled local observation protects other people from becoming part of a diagnostic test.
