Easy and everyday
Topic: a food you enjoy. Opener: “What is a meal you would happily have again?” Expand: how you discovered it. Exit: “Want to switch to music or films?”
Interest-based
Topic: a hobby or skill. Opener: “What is something you like practicing?” Expand: the first small win. Exit: “We can choose something else if that is not your topic.”
Creative
Topic: redesign an ordinary object. Opener: “What everyday thing would you improve?” Expand: one feature. Exit: move to a real object the person enjoys.
Reflective
Topic: a changed opinion. Opener: “What harmless subject have you changed your mind about?” Expand only if freely offered. Exit immediately when it becomes personal or sensitive.
Make it mutual
After asking, share a short answer of your own. Mutual does not mean exchanging equivalent private details. Either person can decline or change topics.
Deliberately outside the matrix
Precise location, money, credentials, official identifiers, intimate images, coercive personal questions, and another person's private information are excluded. Use What Not to Share for safer alternatives.

Adjust energy without changing comfort
A light topic can be quick (“Which snack do you always return to?”) or story-based (“How did it become a favorite?”). A creative topic can be playful or thoughtful without becoming private. The matrix lets a user move horizontally by energy before moving vertically toward more reflective content.
Expand, share, exit
For every topic, the interface should show three separate choices: expand with one related question, share a short answer of your own, or exit to another topic. This prevents a topic card from becoming an interrogation script. A visible Skip this topic is part of the tool, not a failure state.
Topic sensitivity depends on context
Food, family, place, work, health, and belief can be ordinary for one person and sensitive for another. The category cannot decide comfort on their behalf. Ask less, watch the response, and move on promptly.
