CLEAR AUDIO STARTS WITH THE ROOM

Make Your Voice Easier to Hear on Video Chat

Move closer to the intended microphone, reduce nearby noise, and check whether speaker sound is feeding back into the room before changing advanced settings. This guide assumes some sound exists. For no sound, use [Microphone Not Working](/guides/microphone-not-working/).

Trace the room-to-microphone path

Your voice travels through the room to the chosen microphone. Distance, hard reflective surfaces, fans, traffic, other voices, speakers, and automatic device switching can change what arrives. Start with the physical room because it is visible and reversible.

Reduce echo without chasing every setting

Lower speaker volume or move the microphone away from speakers. Headphones can help when they are comfortable and safe, but they are not required. Soft furnishings may reduce reflections; a completely silent room is unnecessary. Avoid promising noise cancellation that has not been verified.

Check connected devices

A Bluetooth headset, display, dock, or webcam may add another microphone or speaker path. Confirm the intended device using the controls available in the tested platform. Permission and device selection are different; allowed access does not guarantee the right input.

Use a ten-second neutral check

In a private setting, speak a neutral sentence at normal volume, pause, and observe an available local indicator. Change one factor and compare. Do not record or upload private conversation audio merely to test quality.

Help the conversation when sound breaks up

Slow slightly, pause after a disrupted phrase, and confirm only the missing point: “I missed the last few words—could you repeat them?” If audio and video both become unstable, use Connection Problems. Clear turn-taking is also part of video chat etiquette.

Ready after the audio audit?

When the intended microphone works and the room is manageable, continue.

Diagnose two common patterns

The other person hears room echo: lower speaker volume, move the microphone away from speakers, or try comfortable headphones. Change one factor, then ask once whether the echo changed. Your voice fades when you turn away: reduce distance or reposition the intended microphone rather than speaking much louder. A connected display or headset may be the actual input.

Do not make the stranger your test technician

A brief “Is my voice understandable?” is reasonable. Repeated instructions, test tones, or demands that the person diagnose your device are not. Finish technical work before returning to a normal exchange. Microphone quality can also make other voices in the room clearer, so protect their privacy.
